June 27: Commemorating the New Martyrs of Ukraine

On this day especially, the Ukrainian Catholic Church honours the many Ukrainian Catholics who endured suffering and torture and died for their faith during periods of religious persecution of World War II and the subsequent Soviet regime in Ukraine.

The Sisters of St Joseph invite us to visit the Shrine of the Venerable Nun-Martyrs Olympia and Lavrentia, who died in the Gulag system of the Soviet Union, and participate in the special services of the day. Be witness to the history and the spiritual significance of this feast day.

The group of New Martyrs of Ukraine were recognized for their martyrdom and their witness to the Catholic faith with beatification by Pope John Paul II on June 27, 2001.
