Ryan Riehl - blind and deaf artist
At the age of ten, Ryan was diagnosed with a tumor growing on his optic nerves which resulted in him losing his sight. Later in life, he also lost his hearing.
Despite losing these two senses, Ryan has been a successful world class 3-event water-skier. As a member of the Canadian Adaptive Waterski Team, he has competed internationally at Disabled Waterski competitions and has been on the podium representing Canada at world events.
Ryan, a graduate of Holy Cross High School in Saskatoon, is of Ukrainian descent on his mother Adeline Riehl's side. Familiar family names in our community.... The Kostyniuks of Wakaw, the Pidhaychuks, the Gurashs, the Pidskalnys - many who immigrated from Ukraine in the early 1900s.
Since 2019, Ryan has been painting and using other mediums to create art. He is incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Saskatchewan artist, Glen Scrimshaw, on a collaboration in 2024.
Ryan mostly enjoys painting trees. He says that trees standing together look strong and healthy. Like the people of Ukraine, the trees stick together and support each other. Ryan believes that if we stick together like the trees, we too can be strong.
MUM is honoured to have received this donation of art from Ryan.
‘Standing Stronger Together’ is on display at the Museum.
