February 19 - National Emblem of Ukraine day

Today marks the 1992 declaration of the Verkhovna Rada to approve the Tryzub as its Coat of Arms.

On February 19, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada approved the golden Tryzub/Trident on a blue shield as the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine, symbolizing the succession from the princely state of Vladimir the Great and the struggle for independence.

The Tryzub represents the unity of Ukrainian lands, the connection of generations, and the indomitability of spirit. It is a thousand-year-old symbol that was used as a talisman and, in the 20th century became a symbol of the struggle for freedom. The tryzub was formally proposed as a state symbol in 1917 by historian Mykhailo Hrushevskyi and adopted by the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1918.

The Golden Tryzub/Trident on a blue shield is the official emblem on Ukraine's documents, money, and the chevrons of defenders. Although only the Small Coat of Arms has been approved so far, it is the highest sacred symbol that unites Ukrainians.
