MUM receives items from decommissioned church

Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church - Borshchiv, near Prud'homme.

On Friday, October 17, 2025, three MUM Board of Directors had the opportunity to witness the process of the major clear-out of church items of the decommissioned Ss Peter and Paul church, prior to its demolition. Participants that afternoon included 5th generation descendants of original settlers to this rural area of Saskatchewan.

As we are aware, many of our rural churches have faced closure and many more are destined for the same fate for a variety of reasons. It is the responsibility of the Eparchial Properties advisors to ensure that contents of such churches are properly and respectfully removed. Icons and sacred items, such as vestments and altar items used during Liturgies and religious services, must be separated from secular items, such as vases and furniture. Disposition of each item is then determined.

With the approval of the Vicar of Eparchial Properties and the Borshchiv council, some articles were donated to the Museum collection. The unique items included: a gospel stand, glass candle holders, the Proskomedia prayer, two hand crosses and very long and unique beeswax candles. These items have been labeled and added to the Religious Gallery display.

Musée Ukrainian Museum is very grateful for their donation! These treasures will forever be protected and preserved at the Museum

It was a very an emotional and solemn afternoon which concluded with a Panakhyda to close the church.
