Following an introduction by UCC-SB vice-president, Megan Worobetz, David presented his book - Standing with Underdogs. Reading excerpts, he spoke about the journey of discovering his family story, including some insights into his own life with that new-found knowledge.

David Chernushenko…. Not a Ukrainian. Barely a Ukrainian-Canadian…. Rather, a Canadian with many questions.

David Chernushenko knew little of his roots in Ukraine until 2021, when he received a document from his Aunt Raya who had completed a family memoir and was sharing the results. On reading it, he asked himself: Why had he been told so little of this amazing story of escape, perseverance and renewal; and how might he work with Raya to bring this story to a much larger audience?

Then, in 2022, Russian forces launched a full-scale war on Ukraine. David was surprised by how viscerally it affected him. Though this was the native land of his father and aunt’s family, he had never visited and didn’t even speak the language. So, why was he so upset about the invasion?

For David to understand demanded a deep dive into his Ukrainian origins and retracing his life journey across six decades. What emerged was a personal family journey telling Raya’s story, sprinkled with his own historical commentary and political writing.

This book tackles a series of weighty contemporary issues and the value of using power and position to uplift and inspire.
