September is Ukrainian Heritage Month

Across Canada and recognized by the Province of Saskatchewan. Wear your vyshyvanka to celebrate!

It's a special time to acknowledge the arrival of Ukrainian immigrants to Canada - starting on September 7th, 1891, who laid the foundations of Ukrainian life in Canada.

Join us as we strive to preserve our rich traditions, stories and spirit. Ukrainian culture lives on - not just as a memory; Ukrainian heritage lives on through art, education, language and tradition. We especially recognize the importance of preserving and sharing Ukrainian culture during this time of displacement and the unprovoked war attempting to destroy Ukrainian identity and culture.

Celebrate! On September 7 - wear vyshyvanka or blue and yellow clothing to honour and show gratitude and respect for our heritage and the people who were one of the founding settler peoples of Saskatchewan.

A snippet about our heritage: One of the first things Ukrainian settlers did upon arrival to Canada was to gather the community together and build a church. In 1906, in Antonivka, near Canora, the faithful, most of whom emigrated from the Chortkiv district in Ukraine, constructed the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. This model is a detailed replica of that church. On display as part of the Museum collection.
