Sunday, June 28, - at the Museum.

"New Roots: Stories of Resilience and Hope" is a collection of powerful, living testimonies from Ukrainian teenagers and their families who have been displaced from their homes by the russian invasion of Ukraine. This project was created by the Ukrainian Bilingual Program at Bethlehem Catholic High School in Saskatoon with teacher and book compiler, Viktoriia Marko. The authors of this collection, considered as the sixth wave of immigration of Ukrainians to Canada, shared memories of the horrors of war, the difficult journey to Canada and the new roots planted in Canadian soil. These are also stories of gratitude and resilience amid profound trials.

At the event Viktoriia introduced the book - from the initial concept to the printed words shared by the contributing authors. Speakers included words by book cover designer, Yulia Bekirova, and editor, Dr William Gulka.

Following this presentation, there was a screening of a filmed interview with Lesia Voroniuk, the initiator of Vyshyvanka Day, which celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year.

In 2006, students at the Yurij Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University launched Vyshyvanka Day by wearing embroidered shirts to class. Now marked in over 70 countries, by more than 20 million people, wearing traditional embroidery is a modern practice. We proudly wear our vyshyvanka. As do our Ukrainian defenders who wear vyshyvanka under their uniforms, just as generations before them did when going into battle.

This academic year, the students of our Ukrainian bilingual program at Bethlehem Catholic High School had the unique opportunity to meet Lesia online and interview her about the meaning and history of this important celebration. Through this film we learn more about Vyshyvanka Day, the strength of the Ukrainian people, and the importance of preserving culture even in the darkest times. The interview is in Ukrainian with English subtitles.
