Exaltation of the Holy Cross

A religious feastday observed annually on September 14

This is the week of the observance of the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

This feastday, celebrated on September 14th, commemorates the finding of the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified. It was found by St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land, in 326AD.

In this image, Empress Helena, wearing the crown and holding the cross, stands alongside the Patriarch of Antioch, Macarius. The cross is elevated for veneration by the faithful.

This large religious artpiece originated in the now decommissioned Exaltation of the Holy Cross church in Hubbard, Saskatchewan and is now on display in the Ecclesiastical gallery at Musée Ukraina Museum. Sadly, there is some obvious damage to the canvas.

It was painted by the Winnipeg-based Ukrainian artist and iconographer, Hnat Sich in 1918.

Ukrainian settlers arrived in the Hubbard area (SE of Ituna) in 1903 from the western county region of Stryi, south of Lviv, in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains.
