Spotlight on... Pokrova
Spotlight on.... where MUM shares items of interest and feature hightlights in our galleries.
October 1 is the Feastday of Pokrova - the Protection of the Mother of God. Покрова Пресвятої Богоридиці.
In the icon for this day, the Blessed Mother holds a rushnyk (ritual towel) in her outstretched arms above the people in a gesture of protection.
During the early days of the invasion of Ukraine, there was a call to 'Close the Sky' - to protect the people and to preserve their heritage. We are still waiting for the powers-that-be to show courage in standing up to the tyrant who continues to attack and destroy.
In our Feature Gallery rushnyky are draped above us, and our collection displayed there to symbolicly 'Close the Sky' and to protect.
The images below are located in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George in Saskatoon.
On the left, the Blessed Mother adorns the ceiling at the entrance to the church. Here, she protects all those who enter this holy place. It was written by Theodore Baran.
On the right, is the icon of the Pokrova - Protection of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos. It was gifted to the Cathedral from the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation as part of their 'Heroes of Their Day' project. This unique icon commemorates Ukrainian Canadian veterans who served Canada during the 2nd World War. It was written by Kyiv-based iconographer Oleksandr Klymenko on the lid of an ammunition box retried from Bucha during the early days of the invasion of Ukraine.
Together we pray for the safety of those serving in the defense of our country - and especially those defending Ukraine against russia's war of aggression and genocide.
